Installing Buddy for Mac OS X
  1. Use Stuffit Expander to uncompress the pkg.tar.gz file to a pkg.tar file, and then to a pkg file.

  2. Double click the pkg file to run the installer.

This installer places the Buddy Retriever application in the /Applications folder. You may move it if you wish.

In addition, it creates the folder /Library/Application Support/buddyretriever, which contains the shell scripts that do the brunt of the work. While running Buddy Retriever, the folder Home Folder/Library/Application Support/buddyretriever gets created. This folder contains shell script preferences, temporary scratch files and the generated web pages.

Running Buddy
  1. Double-click the dog icon in the Applications folder.

  2. You may wish to set your preferences from the Buddy Retriever menu, including zip code for weather reports and list of stocks to fetch.

  3. In the application, click "Fetch Paper." You can wait for him to finish fetching your slippers, or you can begin reading your paper once Buddy indicates that he's downloading Associated Press Headlines.

  4. To read your paper, go back to the Buddy main window and click "Open Paper." The front page of your paper will open in your default Web browser.

  5. Once Buddy has finished fetching, you can look at the other pages of your paper by clicking on the links near the top of the page.

Uninstalling Buddy

In the unlikely event you wish to fully delete Buddy Retriever, follow these steps:
  1. First set all automation features in the preferences window to "No automation".
  2. Delete the application (the dog icon) from /Application (or wherever you put it).
  3. Delete the directory /Library/Application Support/buddyretriever.
  4. Delete the directory Home Folder/Library/Application Support/buddyretriever.
  5. Email me at jimgibbs@users.sourceforge.net and let me know what you didn't like, or how Buddy could be more useful.
OK, the last step is optional, but greatly appreciated. I put a lot of work into Buddy solely so he could be of use to others, so I'd like to see him achieve that goal.

Please contact me with any problem you may have, any request for features or bug-fixes, for feedback on how Buddy is working for you, or just to say "hi".

Installing Buddy for Linux
  1. Take the buddyretriever folder and drag it into your home directory. The current distribution of buddy will only work when that folder is in your home directory, but this will be fixed in future versions so you can put it anywhere on your hard disk.
  2. Open a shell window, type or paste the following line and hit return:
    sh ~/buddyretriever/main.sh
  3. You should see a bunch of status messages fly by as Buddy fetches information from various sites. When buddy says "Fetching your slippers," he's done. Open this file in your Web browser:
    ~/buddyretriever/index.html
  4. You can bookmark this page for easy access in the future, and set up a cron job to run Buddy as often as you like (I recommend not running him more than once every 15 minutes to ensure you don't have multiple instances running at the same time overwriting each other's output).

Uninstalling Buddy

If you don't like Buddy, there are only two steps to uninstall him.
  1. Drag the buddyretriever folder to the trash. All his files live there.
  2. Email me at jimgibbs@users.sourceforge.net and let me know what you didn't like, or how Buddy could be more useful.
OK, the second step is optional, but greatly appreciated. I put a lot of work into Buddy solely so he could be of use to others, so I'd like to see him achieve that goal.

Please contact me with any problem you may have, any request for features or bug-fixes, for feedback on how Buddy is working for you, or just to say "hi".

If you're a programmer who would like to work on a Windows port of Buddy, contact me. It shouldn't be impossible, but I expect you'll need at least a good understanding of shell scripting and LibCurl for Windows.
